The crystal ball is the most recognisable tool of divination: a transparent sphere on a table, hands around it and a gaze that gets lost inside. The technique is called crystallomancy and it is a branch of something far older, scrying on surfaces, which includes mirrors, water and fire.
Where it comes from
Gazing into a shining surface to see what is not there is an ancient practice. Pliny the Elder writes in the 1st century that the Druids read in crystals, and in the Middle Ages crystals and polished mirrors were consulted. The most famous case is that of the English mathematician John Dee, astrologer to Elizabeth I, who in the 16th century worked with the seer Edward Kelley on an obsidian mirror and a crystal sphere that are kept today in the British Museum.
The image we all share, the fairground gypsy with the ball under a shawl, is much more recent: it was born in Victorian England, when clairvoyance became fashionable in parlours and fairs and glass balls were already mass-produced. From there it went to the cinema, and from the cinema to universal iconography.
How gazing into the crystal works
Whoever practises crystallomancy does not expect to watch a film inside the ball. They sit in half-light, fix their gaze on the crystal, let their sight go out of focus and wait. After a few minutes the sphere seems to fill with a mist, and in it shapes, colours, sometimes scenes appear. What the ball does is give the mind a blank canvas: the relaxed gaze and the dim light favour the images the imagination projects, and the question carried inside gives them meaning.
That is why seers insist on three things: a clear question, silence and patience. Without a question there is no thread to pull; without silence the mind does not let go; and without patience the mist never opens.
How to consult the ball
First choose the theme, love, money, health or destiny, and put a specific question. "What awaits me if I accept that job?" is better than "what does the future hold?". Then look, without forcing, and let the vision take shape. What appears is rarely literal: the crystal speaks in images, and interpreting them is part of the consultation.
If one vision opens another question, carry on: the best consultations chain several questions on the same matter, and each answer refines the previous one. What does not work is jumping from subject to subject or repeating the same question until it says what you want to hear.
