How to Cast the Runes Online
The runes of the Elder Futhark are the alphabet that Germanic and Norse peoples carved into wood, bone and stone between the 2nd and 8th centuries. Each of its twenty-four signs names a force — wealth, ice, harvest, justice — and that is why they were used for centuries to question fate: one was pulled blind from a bag and read as it fell.
In this online version the bag shakes on your screen and the rune is drawn at random, with nobody choosing for you. It is then read in the light of your question: the same rune does not say the same thing to someone asking about a job as to someone asking about a person who left.
Steps for your casting
- Press Consult the runes and write your question. The more concrete it is, the clearer the reading.
- The bag shakes and a rune falls on the cloth. It can land upright or reversed: these are not the same.
- Read the answer in its window. It stays in the casting: press the rune to open it again.
- You have five questions per casting. Once they run out, the runes are gathered and you start over.
Upright and Reversed Runes
A rune that lands turned is read reversed: the same force, but blocked, in excess, or turned against you. Fehu upright speaks of earned wealth; reversed, of wealth slipping away. Eight of the twenty-four are symmetrical and never fall reversed, because turned around they are the same figure: Gebo, Hagalaz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Sowilo, Ingwaz and Dagaz.
Why Five Questions and No More
The five-rune spread is among the most used: one for where the matter comes from, one for where it stands today, one for what blocks it, one for what you can do, and one for where it is all heading. Five questions cover that. Twenty in a row do not give more truth, only more noise: that is why at the fifth the runes are gathered and you begin again.
The Twenty-Four Runes
The Elder Futhark is divided into three groups of eight, called aettir:
- First aett: Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo. The material, strength and the word.
- Second aett: Hagalaz, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowilo. Trial, waiting and what resists.
- Third aett: Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala. Justice, bonds and what is inherited.
Remember: casting runes is a pastime of mystery, with no verifiable scientific basis. The readings invite you to look at your situation from another angle, but the decisions are always yours.
